Sermon Devotional: Jesus Revealed

Sermon Title: Jesus Revealed
Scripture: Revelation 1:12-18 (ESV)“Fear not, I am the first and the last,” Revelation 1:17b
We have recently embarked on a journey through the Book of Revelation, a letter as dramatic as it is deeply encouraging. Written by the Apostle John during his exile on the island of Patmos, these words were originally sent to seven churches enduring bitter persecution under the Roman Emperor Domitian. The first-century believers desperately needed their hope restored and their courage renewed. Today, we find ourselves also need encouragement.
Revelation uses vivid imagery and symbolic language to pull back the curtain on spiritual reality. While there is much to unpack in the coming months, the opening chapter provides exactly what these seven churches needed: a breathtaking revelation of who Jesus is and what He has done that offers hope and encouragement.
The Vision of the King
As you read Revelation 1:12–18, invite the Holy Spirit to lead you. Each detail of this vision points to a powerful truth about our Savior:
- His Presence: Standing among "seven golden lampstands" (the churches), Jesus is the "Son of Man"—the promised Messiah of Daniel 7 who possesses an eternal kingdom.
- His Purity and Power: Clothed in a priestly robe with eyes like "flames of fire," nothing escapes His pure, all-searching gaze. His feet, like "burnished bronze," speak of His absolute holiness, while His voice, like the "roar of many waters," commands our total allegiance and obedience.
- His Word and Glory: From His mouth comes a "sharp two-edged sword"—His decisive word of judgment. His face shines with the "strength of the sun," a glory so brilliant we cannot look upon it directly.
- His Eternity: When He declares He is "the first and the last," He is claiming the very nature of God—the Alpha and the Omega.
The Touch of Grace
Faced with such overwhelming glory, John did the only natural thing: he fell at Jesus' feet as though he were dead. Yet, what happens next is the heart of the Gospel. Jesus lays His right hand on him and whispers, "Fear not."
Why should we not fear? Not because Jesus isn't powerful or "scary" in His holiness—the glory of the risen Christ is truly awesome—but because of what He has done out of infinite love:
- "I died" — He paid the full penalty for our sins on the cross.
- "I am alive forevermore" — His resurrection proves His divinity and the success of His mission.
- "I have the keys of Death and Hades" — He is sovereign over every trial, every persecution, and death itself.
Our Response
Brothers and sisters, this is the message for us today. He has conquered sin on your behalf. Because He died, you are forgiven. Because He lives, you will live eternally with Him in the palingenesia—the "Genesis again" where all things are made new (Mt. 19:28). Our response to this revealed Christ determines everything.
Consider—
╬ How does the reality of Jesus holding the "keys" change the way you view your current fears or struggles?
╬ Lord Jesus, we bow in absolute awe. You are the Glorified King, our High Priest, and the Light of the World. You are the eternal Son of God, yet You reached out Your hand to take our guilt, our shame, and our sin upon Yourself. We are humbled that through faith, we receive Your righteousness and the gift of eternal life. We praise You for Your staggering grace and Your tireless love. In Your holy Name we pray, Amen.
